Well when I was growing up there was not only no Google, there was also no internet or email or mobile phones!
Life was slower, and I got my information about space from reading books and magazines and watching documentaries and news broadcasts about the Apollo missions to the moon on (black and white) TV.
Using our imaginations was also an important distraction and method of play. Memory was critical, as you could not carry around a paper encylopedia ;-)) Now we have Wikipedia and Google, but it makes us lazy.
